So here’s part 2 of a series that started 6+ years ago . The Problem You’ve got a service that accepts HTTP requests, each request encoding many of its details in headers. These headers are well known (that is, there’s a fixed set of them we care about) but the different kinds of requests use different subsets of the headers, out of (say) 192 possible headers each kind of request uses (say) 10 or fewer of the headers. While headers come off the wire as strings, we almost immediately map them to an enumeration ( HeaderNames ). Existing code interrogates headers in a few, hard to change, ways which defines the operations that any header storage type must support. Specifically, we must be able to: Get and set
